Welcome to our P.E Curriculum
At Cuddington Croft, we pride ourselves in developing our children’s teamwork, resilience and to celebrate the success of ourselves and of others. We feel that through our P.E curriculum and extra curricular activities, we offer our children a broad and varied curriculum which develops their knowledge and skills as well as their confidence to take part in intra-school and inter-school competitions. We feel it is important that our children get the opportunity to represent the school in the local community. Our P.E curriculum helps develop confidence, teamwork, effective communication and allows our children to learn about success and how to deal with not winning through a supportive environment that allows for the children to celebrate taking part and the little successes, which we are extremely proud of.
Physical Education at Cuddington Croft, helps our children to understand what physical activity looks and feels like and how with practice they can improve their individual and team performance to reach high quality outcomes. In KS1, pupils develop a fundamental range of gymnastics, dance and games skills. They will be able to demonstrate basic movements and begin to link skills together to work towards an intended outcome. They will also start to understand the requirements of working within different group dynamics and demonstrate this with increased confidence.
By the time our children reach Years 5 and 6, they will have a deep and varied PE experience. They will be able to call upon an extensive range of skills and link these together to perform more complex movements and tasks. They will have the confidence to work well within a variety of group dynamics and apply tactical and strategic thinking in a range of contexts under pressure.We aim for our children to be able to evaluate their own performance and that of others. Through developing our children's P.E skills throughout their time at Cuddington, we also provide them with opportunities to lead our younger children and model different skills to them.
Implementation - how do we plan and teach P.E?
Our children undertake two hours of PE every week in lessons that are planned to cover the National Curriculum themes of athletics, dance, gymnastics, OAA and games (net & wall, invasion and striking & fielding). The curriculum considers the importance of both the breadth and depth of learning. Ongoing CPD is used to ensure that all staff feel confident in delivering both engaging and challenging PE lessons to all pupils. We offer CPD through specialist PE teachers who work alongside our staff to develop their subject knowledge and provide them with the skills to deliver both engaging and challenging lessons in future years. Our staff are supported with nationally recognised PE resources that provide extensive teaching and learning materials including video clips to build teaching confidence. The lessons begin with a high intensity warm up linked to their topic to engage and focus the children. They then spend a short time revisiting previous skills before learning new ones. They practise in isolation first before applying them context of a mini game. Throughout this lesson structure, there are opportunities to extend and challenge individual pupils and provide support for others. The sequences of lessons teach new skills and develop existing ones over a number of weeks resulting in a tournament, performance or task which allows those skills to be showcased in a competitive environment.
Children have 10 hours of swimming lessons each year from Reception up to year 5 with catch up lessons in place for those children who fail to meet the National Curriculum requirements for swimming and water safety by the end of Year 5.
P.E is also implemented throughout our curriculum with themed days including dance-a-thons, run for Pudsey, triathlon, swimming galas and our extra curricular clubs.
Impact - how is progress shown?
At Cuddington Croft, our chldren's PE experience should provide a depth of learning in a positive and engaging environment. Basic underlying principles and skills will have been practised along with further opportunities to develop these.Children will be confident to try new things and take risks. They will be able to make quick decisions and choices when planning tasks, playing games or during performances. They will have a range of strategies for solving problems and show resilience to persevere when encountering difficulties. Our children will understand the benefits of working in different group dynamics and demonstrate key teamwork skills in line with our school ethos. They will have the confidence and resilience to lead, critique and support others. Cuddington children will participate in inter school competitions with confidence and feel proud that they are representing their school. They demonstrate impeccable sportsmanship values whether in victory and defeat. Throughout our Science, PSHE and P.E curriculum, the children will understand the importance of physical activity in a wider context and possess the skills and enthusiasm to carry them forward as individuals.
